Event Details

Jalan Besar, literally "Big Road" in Malay, runs from Kallang River to Rochor River. What started as a small track through a swampy area was expanded to a main thoroughfare when the surrounding land was reclaimed in the 1850's. Full urbanisation took off after World War I - a war that echoes through in names of streets and squares laid out in that period. Farmland got replaced by shophouses housing workshops, eateries and hostels.

Jalan Besar is now a conservation area with many reminders of its rich history. Especially noteworthy is its unique collection of shophouses that showcase the various architecture styles these were built in. We will also learn about the patrons who commissioned these shophouses and how the occupants changed from hardware shops to boutique hotels.

Along the way we will pass some prominent landmarks like the Jalan Besar Stadium built in 1929, considered the birthplace of Singapore football. It was here that the Malaya Cup (1932-1966) and later, the Malaysia Cup (1967-1973), was held for over four decades before moving to the National Stadium. Another highlight is the Old Victoria School built in 1933 where the PAP headquarter is now located.

Our tour will end near the Swee Choon Dim Sum restaurant where you will have an opportunity to enjoy local food at your own cost.
