Event Details

Our tour will take us to a part of Katong in the East where in the early 19th Century coconut plantations became seaside retreats for the wealthy in the 1950s. It is a melting pot of Peranakan Chinese, Eurasians, Malay and Indian.

We will learn about Peranakan culture, food and tradition as well as the various architecture styles of the shophouses along East Coast Road, Joo Chiat and the iconic colourful ornate terrace rows on Koon Seng Road. We will see murals by local artists and learn about the Nonyaware and fashion. Tour will end with a stop where we can try typical Peranakan food. We will also make a stop at the Kim Choo Kueh Chang shop selling the famous rice dumplings.

Our guide Helena Yeo is an STB licensed tourist guide who will share stories about landmark shops such as the "Red House Bakery" and the Tay Buan Guam, one of the first supermarkets in Singapore back in the days.
