Let's go and explore the vibrant neighbourhood of Joo Chiat. Today the area is famous as the up-and-coming playground for the young and hip with its quirky shops and eateries but in the middle of last century, in this part of Katong, coconut plantations where already being turned into seaside retreats for the wealthy.
Joo Chiat is a real melting pot of Chinese, Eurasians, Malay and Indian but its most famous inhabitants are the Peranakan Chinese. We will learn about the colourful culture, food and traditions of the Babas and the Nonyas and what makes this ethnic group so unique. The highlight of the tour will be a visit to a private shophouse with an amazing Peranakan antiques collection.
Along the way we will see colourful shophouses, landmark buildings and murals by local artists. We'll get an opportunity to try local snacks and as usual there will be an option to join for lunch after the tour at the Old Bibik Peranakan Restaurant at your own expense.
