Event Details

Did you know that Holland Village has nothing to do with Holland in The Netherlands?

This vibrant neighbourhood was named in honour of an architect by the name of Hugh Holland, one of the early residents of this estate. From a gambier and rubber plantation in the 1870s to a bustling military village in the 1930s, Holland Village and Commonwealth have transformed to become a trendy neighbourhood with charming shops and vibrant nightlife.

Our walking tour will begin at Chip Bee Gardens, once the desired place to live for high-ranking British soldiers and now a popular hot spot. We will continue through the estate to see the hidden gem of the Yin Fo Fui Kun Cemetery, nestled in the middle of a residential estate surrounded by HDB blocks. Founded in 1887 by the Hakka clan, it is Singapore's last Hakka graveyard.

As we make our way to the commercial center, we will stop at several specialty shops, some dating back to the 1940s such as the Thambi Magazine store. Be it fashion, sailing, National Geographic, economics or foreign language papers you can all find them here. We continue along Lorong Mambong where we will see coffee houses, restaurants and wine bars which were founded here in the 1980s. Our tour will end at the Hawker Centre and wet market.
